Matthew Perry 911 Dispatch Audio Mentions ‘Drowning’ amid Death

A dispatch call to Matthew Perry reveals more details about the actor’s death.

An audio dispatch, obtained by TMZ, mentions “drowning” after Perry was found dead in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home on Saturday. He was 54 years old.

In the 15-second clip, the man says, “Agent 23. Rescue 23. EMS 9 on the radio. In response to a drowning,” as emergency responders were dispatched to Perry’s home.

TMZ reported Saturday that a call to 911 was made from Perry’s address to retrieve a person in cardiac arrest after he was found unresponsive at his home. No drugs or foul play were found on the spot, according to the media.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told PEOPLE that officers responded to a call at Perry’s address regarding the death of a man in his 50s, though they would not confirm the identity of the deceased.

Representatives for Perry did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Six days before his death and what turned out to be his last Instagram post, Perry shared a photo of himself in a jacuzzi. He wrote: “Oh, so warm swirling water makes you feel good? I’m Mattman.”

Perry was best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friendsin which he starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, from 1994 to 2004.

Warner Bros. released a statement about the beloved star following his death on Saturday: “We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry. Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. family. Television Group. The impact of his comedic genius was felt throughout the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of many. This is a heartbreaking day and we send our love to his family, his loved ones and all his devoted fans.”

Despite his success, Perry has struggled with personal issues with drug and alcohol addiction, which he told PEOPLE last year and detailed in his 2022 memoir. Friends, lovers and the big scary thing.

Perry died on Saturday at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 54.

Speaking about his opioid addiction in 1997, he told PEOPLE last October, “I had never taken a pill before that. That first feeling was euphoria. And then I shouldn’t have been drinking, which made you sweat and smell of alcohol. In the end, that’s how my friends knew I was doing something else because I stopped drinking.”

Perry said his addiction began when he was cast as Chandler Friends. “I could handle it, sort of,” he continued. “But when I was 34, I was really in deep trouble.”

“I didn’t know how to stop,” he added. “Disease and addiction are progressive, so they get worse and worse as you get older.”
