Maya Hawke Jokes Her Hollywood Family Is Like the ‘Boring, Indie Kardashians’

Maya Hawke has a different kind of showbiz family.

The Stranger Things actress (25), joked ua Diversity interview with dad Ethan Hawke, “We’re like the boring, indie Kardashians.”

Maya and her actor brother Levon (21) are the children of Ethan (52) and Uma Thurman (53). The Oscar nominees divorced in 2005, and he later married his wife Ryan in 2008, and Thurman had a daughter, Luna Busson, with her ex Arpad in 2012.

Ethan directed Maya in the new film Wildcat, in which she plays novelist Flannery O’Connor. Additionally, Maya is starring in an upcoming film The killing room with Uma and Samuel L. Jackson.

“Simply put, I’m not a dad! And I’m not embarrassed about it,” Ethan joked Diversity.

Maya added that she had “moments of insecurity” about the nepotism discourse during filming Wildcat. “But,” she continued, “the internet doesn’t have a lot of nuance. My dad was a great teacher and we want to work together. We love being with each other.”

“If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s fair enough,” Ethan said. “You have to let people have their own opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you’re on stage.”

The father-daughter duo added that joint creativity is natural.

Maya recalled, “Before we started, everyone was asking me, ‘Are you nervous about working with your dad?’ I didn’t mean to be.”

Ethan added, “This is our safe place…” Maya finished his sentence, “…creating art together.” Ethan then quipped, “I mean, Thanksgiving? That’s not so sure.”

Later in the interview, about mom Uma, Maya said, “I’m really excited for people to see my mom being funny. She’s been doing indie comedies for the past few years that, for whatever reason, haven’t seen the light of day. She’s the funniest person I’ve ever met. I know.”

Wildcat will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this month.
