McDonald’s is making a big change to its burgers for the first time in decades.
The fast food giant is shaking up the way of cooking and preparing classic dishes such as cheeseburger, Big Mac and Quarter Pounder with cheese.

The changes will affect McDonald’s menu classics like the Big Mac and cheeseburger

The changes will also affect cheese, pastries and lettuce
The changes will be rolled out to all 1,450 restaurants from next week, after being trialled in several locations across the country.
McDonald’s said it was the “most significant menu change” in decades.
The changes include putting onions on top of each patty as they cook and changing the way the beef patties are fried.
Gareth Pearson, McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: “We’re constantly innovating and improving our menu and we’ve found that a collection of complementary small improvements to iconic burgers makes a significant difference to the taste.
“Another big part of this transition has been around our restaurant teams and how we can support them in providing the best possible customer experience.
“Not only have we introduced new kitchen technology, but we’ve also retrained all 177,000 crew members on these new procedures to enable them to serve up our best burgers yet.”
The full list of changes to McDonald’s classic beef burgers is as follows:
- Beef patties – stronger grilling for hotter, sizzling and juicier beef patties for maximum flavor
- Grilled Onion – New Girl Processes include adding garlic to the top of the patties as they cook for extra color and charred flavor
- Lettuce – fresh lettuce straight from that fridge for a crunchier taste
- Cheese – warmer beef patties will make the cheese more melted, creating a smoother texture
- New pastries – with butter, brioche-style recipe and freshly toasted
Meanwhile, the McDonald’s menu items to which the changes will apply are as follows:
- Big Mac
- A quarter pounder with cheese
- Cheeseburger
- Double cheeseburger
- Triple cheeseburger
The changes have already been introduced in the United States and Australia.
Thomas O’Neill, head of menu for McDonald’s UK and Ireland, exclusively told The Sun that the changes will take his burgers “to the next level”.
I tried the McDonald’s Breakfast Wrap with a major change to a key ingredient
“There’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into testing and perfecting each change to our menu offerings,” he said.
“But even more so when it comes to reimagining our classics for the first time in 50 years.
“It’s really exciting to be rolling out these changes to all our restaurants and I’m looking forward to our teams serving delicious yet classic dishes to customers across the UK and Ireland.”
McDonald’s regularly changes its menu, adding new and returning items every six weeks.
McDonald’s
But Big Mac items and Chicken McNuggets are constant staples.
The chain recently revealed its Easter menu, which will arrive on Wednesday (March 13).
New items include Galaxy Truffle Bunny McFlurry and Hot Cross Bun Pie.
While the McCrispy Deluxe, Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry and Halloumi Fries will also return.
How to save money at McDonald’s
You might not think so, but you could end up being charged more based solely on the McDonald’s restaurant you choose.
Research by The Sun has shown that a Big Mac meal can be up to 30p cheaper at restaurants just two miles apart.
In the meantime, you can grab a Big Mac and fries for just £2.99 by completing the feedback survey found on any old McDonald’s receipt.
The payment receipt should come with a 12-digit code that you can enter on the Food for Thought website with your submitted survey.
You will then receive a five digit code which is your voucher for the £2.99 offer.
Be sure to check out all the different apps and platforms if you’re ordering McDonald’s to your home, too.
Our research has shown that some can charge up to £1.20 more than others.
How can I find the nearest McDonald’s?
If you’re planning to go to McDonald’s, you’ll want to know where the nearest location is.
The chain has a restaurant locator on its website that you can use to find the nearest one – and check what time it opens.
Please note that McDonald’s serves breakfast every day until 11am.
After that, the menu switches to a normal menu serving meals like burgers, chicken nuggets and more.
In the meantime, we tried the limited edition McSpicy burger.
In addition, The Sun was invited to taste the pink desserts.
