He realized that most of his family members were gang members and involved in criminal activities. He was able to identify drug addicts and drug dealers. Murray told Sports Illustrated that he had heard rumors that his great-grandmother was in a gang. His mother fell into gang life and spent time in and out of prison. One is a strong relationship, and the other is a growing relationship with his parents. Dejounte and Meka, a mother and son combination, would jump from one residence to another. When Murray was first arrested in high school, he and his mother were removed from public housing.
In 2019, Murray wrote an emotional note to his mother, praising her for keeping her promise. Murray wrote that his mother returned from prison and promised him that she would never return. And Meka succeeded. She supported her son and saw him become one of the best basketball players in the country. Murray also had a close relationship with his stepfather, whom he nicknamed Heavy Chevy. Murray shared a touching tribute in memory of his stepfather, who died in 2020. Murray and his father, John, did not have a great relationship. Murray admits that he was not a dead man, but he was also not a father who would have been there to take care of his children.
But those days are long gone. Instead of following the family legacy, Murray put his head down and started surrounding himself with the right people. In 2022, NBA Youngboy had a disagreement with Murray over the basketball player’s care for his child. Jania cleared the air, claiming that Dejounte never misbehaved with Kacey. Family pictures show that Dejounte has done his best to integrate their family, and Kacey is also an important member of the Murray household.
