Mei Mac Wikipedia, Actor, Age, Toronto, Armpit Hair – Fans of all ages smiled as widely as the story’s enormous, furry Catbus character when word got out that Studio Ghibli’s iconic anime, My Neighbour Totoro, was going to be staged at London’s Barbican. The legendary tale from Studio Ghibli is being performed on stage for the first time, and ticket sales broke the Barbican’s one-day box office record.

Mei Mac, an actor and puppeteer, is at the focus of this one-of-a-kind production, which is currently running until January 2023. I’m playing Mei Kusakabe, who, along with her sister Satsuki, flees the reality of their hospitalised mother to explore the nearby woods, where they encounter magical beings and adorable forest spirits who are hidden from adults.
Mei and the rest of the cast and crew are bringing this enchanted, spiritual, and joyful world into our own with puppets created by renowned puppeteer Basil Twist and a script by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Speaking to actress and writer Cherrelle Skeete, Mac adds, “We can’t just be performers and actors; we have to be makers in our own right because, if we don’t, who else will put our voices out there?” Two change-makers who are dedicated to their neighbourhood: In addition to being a network and resource for Black woman performers, Blacktress UK was co-founded by Skeete and Mac, who both play important roles in the Rising Waves collective that supports and uplifts persons with British East and South East ancestry.

This is wonderful! Tell me about the small production you’re in.Meng Mei: What am I doing, exactly? [laughs] My Neighbour Totoro, the first stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli movie, has just wrapped up rehearsals at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. Ghibli is working with us on it, which is wonderful because we can get their opinion. The first Princess Mononoke adaptation I ever worked on was also a Studio Ghibli adaptation, so I feel like I’ve bookended this decade of my career with Ghibli, which is absolutely wonderful.
That’s incredible. It’s a full circle moment to hear how you connected the dots from the beginning of your career and where you are now. You can see the similarities and how it relates to your younger self. I’m really thrilled to watch it and can’t wait.MM: You always give me advice to enjoy myself and my accomplishments. We both entered this field at roughly the same time, and I am inspired by all you do and what you stand for. Tell me about your recent activities.
I performed in Paulette Randall’s production of Roy Williams’ brand-new play The Fellowship at the Hampstead Theatre, where we wrapped up the run in July. We had a great run, but a few days before we began previews, something happened that caused me to take over the lead role. That definitely came as a surprise. The universe stated, “You will not be sitting in the dressing room, you will not be leaving the stage!” It was not in the plan; I was quite glad to perform my three scenes. [Two laughs] Because the plot is concentrated on a Jamaican-British family and the through line is mostly focused on two sisters and generational issues, Paulette is able to create such a nurturing environment.
It uses a wholistic strategy. I’m not sure whether you’ve noticed this, but despite how much you share and how much work you put into Rising Waves, you constantly have to remind yourself of the [advice] you’ve given to others.MM: You must internalise what you project externally, exactly. Although we might be tempted to say, “Yes, take up the space,” you need to keep in mind that “I also have to take up the space.” [laughs]
That’s accurate. We must constantly confront our internalised racism, as well as our internalised misogyny. Due to the socialisation we’ve received in this nation, we must have that discussion. We must constantly engage in this conversation, spend time alone, and silence ourselves.
