Melissa Gilbert isn’t afraid to talk about her health. The 59-year-old has been transparent about all things aging, botox and fillers, and last year she described how she prepared herself for a colonoscopy. The Little House on the Prairie actress is now updating her followers on her medical condition from the hospital, revealing the harrowing incident that sent her to the emergency room.
Gilbert posted a “public post” on Instagram over the weekend that included photos from the hospital and explained how a minor insect bite turned into a serious health issue. In the first photo, she had an infusion in her hand, and in the second, an insect bite and swelling on her upper arm.
She commented with glowing cynicism: “Well, it was a wonderful night in the ER. Two days ago my hand was stung by a flying insect, not a bee or wasp. Last night my hand was very swollen, red and hot. In the caption of her photo, she said: “I called my doctor @skincarelab and he suggested we go to the ER.
I was going to wait but @timbusfield commented: “Absolutely not. We are leaving! After numerous tests, I was diagnosed with an abscess and cellulitis. I was given paracetamol, benedryl, and clindamycin intravenously. He immediately got better. I was up all night. Today I started taking oral antibiotics, Benedryl and ibuprofen.
The 59-year-old advised her followers to be careful with insect bites. “Lesson learned: treat bug bites seriously! Don’t delay treatment because you think it’s just a small bite if it starts to swell up a lot (my whole upper arm swelled up!). How much worse can things get? visit your [doctor], emergency or urgent care. I’m not kidding. She continued.
When Laura Ingalls Wilder was alive, it would have resulted in death or amputation. Treatment is available. Now I’m going to take my meds and rest like the adorable bunny that I am. Stupid insect bite. A special thanks to Bonsecours Hospital in Port Jervis, New York. I’m going to bed now.
