Melissa Highsmith News
After fifty years, one of the country’s oldest mysterious missing persons cases has been solved. When she was just 21 months old, Melissa Highsmith was kidnapped in Fort Worth, Texas on August 23, 1971. She has now been reunited with her family after many years thanks to an anonymous tip and DNA analysis that put an end to the incredible mystery. 50 years. .
Melissa described the Thanksgiving gathering to CBS News as “overwhelming, but also the most wonderful feeling in the world.” “I’m really happy; Words cannot express what I feel. Alta Apantenco, her biological mother, told WFAA: “I am very happy to see my daughter, whom I did not think she would see again.
Melissa’s mother moved to Fort Worth as a single parent at the age of 21 after divorcing her partner, Jeffrie Highsmith, around the time of Melissa’s kidnapping. Apantenco desperately needed a babysitter to care for her son while she started working as a waitress, so he placed an ad in the neighborhood newspaper.
Ruth Johnson, the alleged babysitter he hired, raised a 21-month-old girl for her mother’s roommate while Apantenco was at work. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), the roommate said the woman who arrived to pick up the newborn was “beautiful” and “dressed to impress,” including white gloves, sunglasses, and a beanie.
Then, in September 2022, NCMEC received a tip about a possible sighting in Charleston, South Carolina. The vendor claimed to have recognized digitally aged women’s faces from NCMEC’s open boxes. The lead was a dead end and the Highsmith family had to fly from Texas to Charleston in October to speak to residents about the case and raise awareness.
However, Jeffrie Highsmith’s father underwent a 23andMe DNA test, which linked him to Melissa’s biological ancestry. Her Facebook page was quickly discovered after a quick search online, and Jeffrie and Apanteco’s other children contacted the 23AndMe link and convinced her to meet up.
“I started crying… It’s very emotional after 51 years,” Jeffrie told CBS News.

The family received a final link that required them to locate themselves after looking at photos of their baby and discovering that they had a certain birthmark. Since then, Apantenco has discovered that her young daughter has spent most of her life in Fort Worth and grew up less than 20 minutes from him.
Melissa, who was married and went by the name Melanie Walden, claimed she grew up in an “abusive” home and “didn’t feel loved as a child” even though she had no idea she had been kidnapped.
“When I was 15 years old, I ran away. I went out into the street. I took the necessary measures to survive. I was a street worker,” she admitted.
But the photographic evidence especially convinced her. “Once I saw a picture of a child and I put a picture of my baby on it, it’s like my twin,” the woman exclaimed.
Melissa talked to the person who raised her and got the answers she needed.
“I asked him, ‘Do you have to tell me something?’ and it was confirmed that she knew that I was Melissa’s baby, so she made it real,” the woman said.
