The Fayette County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Michael Campbell, 46, was the bicyclist. Coroner Gary Ginn issued a press release saying he was pronounced dead at 5:07 p.m. and that his death was ruled an accident. It is not clear whether the driver in the accident will be prosecuted.

Truex said the crash was being reviewed Thursday morning by the LPD Crash Reconstruction Unit. It is not known what kind of car was involved in the collision. Kentucky State Police data shows 48 fatal crashes were reported in Lexington through the end of November this year. 38 people died as a result of the 35 fatal crashes that occurred in Lexington last year. This year’s first fatal crash involving a bicycle is also the first since June 2022, when 30-year-old Michael Hensley was hit by a car at the intersection of High Street and Oliver Lewis Way and died.

The motorcyclist had potentially life-threatening injuries when they were taken to a UK hospital. Although the accident reconstruction unit was investigating, it is still not known what exactly caused the accident. “It leaves a sense of sadness,” said Steve Zdasar, a volunteer and bike mechanic at community bike company Broke Spoke. Maybe it was just someone trying to get home after work. You know, rush hour is at four o’clock. Zdasar claims that he rides a bicycle several times a week and that the city does not provide adequate protection for cyclists. “The problem with many of our bike lanes is that the only thing that protects cyclists is reflective tape on the road,” Zdasar said. “That won’t stop the car.”
