Michael Loftus News

The 93-year-old former GAA President. Dr. Loftus was a native of Crossmolina, County Mayo, and he played football for the Mayo senior team that won the All-Ireland final in 1951.

Between 1949 and 1953, during his time with the county, he won four championships. Dr. Loftus continued to referee matches at the club and inter-county levels after he stopped playing, and in 1965 and 1968, he did so for the All-Ireland final.

The licenced physician also operated a medical practise in Mayo’s northern region, and for a while, he served as the region’s coroner. His daughter-in-law’s current coroner in the Mayo region is Dr. Eleanor Fitzgerald.

Following the end of his refereeing career, Dr. Loftus was named Connacht GAA Council chairman. Later, he served as chair of the committee that organised the Association’s 100th-anniversary festivities in 1984. Dr. Loftus was a vocal opponent of societal alcohol misuse throughout his professional life.

Michael Martin, the Tánaiste, was one of many who honoured Dr. Loftus by sharing a message on social media. Deeply saddened by the demise of former GAA President Dr. Michael Loftus, a man of high integrity who made significant contributions to Irish sport & society, it said.

“Mick, an All-Ireland football winner with his beloved Mayo, was a trailblazer in the fight against alcoholism. His contributions as a coroner and general practitioner have endured. I send my deepest sympathies to all of his family and friends. Thomas Byrne, the minister for sport, also paid tribute to the former GAA president on social media.

“My sincere condolences to the family and friends of former Mayo footballer and All-Ireland winner, @officialgaa President and exceptional physician, Dr. Michael Loftus,” he wrote in the post. Over the course of his lengthy life, he significantly influenced public life. Go raibh an anam, Ar dheis Dé.
