Michael Schumacher’s life changed after a horrific skiing accident in 2013 that left him with a near-fatal head injury, and the former F1 champion has not been seen in public since the incident while he recovers.
However, his former team-mate, Johnny Herbert, recently spoke out about Michael’s condition, admitting that he is “not close” to his former self, and that his injuries have had a big impact on his brother, Ralf.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, he said: “When Ralf Schumacher was with Sky Germany, we met a lot. Ralf had to do a lot of things for and with his family in terms of what happened to Michael. He has matured. He is a very different person now who he was as a driver. He’s a good human being now. He’s changed a lot after having to deal with the current situation with his brother.”

Speaking about Michael’s condition, he added: “There’s never any news. What we do know is that we never hear positive news. It’s a terrible thought that he’s still not able to be close to the Michael that we all remember. And that’s very sad. ”

Michael’s wife Corinna keeps her husband’s recovery a secret and rarely speaks publicly about his condition. For the Netflix documentary, Schumacher, back in 2021, explained: “I just felt that he was someone special. I think he’s just very strong mentally. Extremely strong. He still shows me every day how strong he is… I miss him. Michael every day. But it’s not just me who misses him. The kids, the family, his father, everyone around him. Everyone misses Michael, but Michael is here – different, but here.”

Michael’s friend Eddie Jordan also previously spoke about the situation to The Sun, saying: “It’s been almost ten years and Corinna hasn’t been able to go to a party or a lunch or this or that, she’s like a prisoner because everyone wants to talk to her about Michael when she doesn’t need to be reminded of it every minute.”
He added: “[Corinna] has set some rules, I know her very well and long before Michael Schumacher. She is a lovely girl… I tried to go see Michael in the early days and Corinna refused, and rightly so as too many people wanted to visit him… Jean Todt was given the privilege of visiting him as they were close from their time together at Ferrari which is completely understandable. I couldn’t go see Michael and they said, ‘We love you Eddie and we’ve been with you for a very long time, but we need privacy and Michael’s protection.'”

Michael’s former manager admitted he was “still angry” at not being able to visit, telling Gazzetta dello Sport: “I tried to contact him hundreds of times [his wife] Corinna didn’t answer either. I called Jean Todt to ask if I should go to the hospital, and he told me to wait – ‘it’s too early’… I called the next day, but no one answered. I did not expect such behavior and I am still angry about it. They kept me outside, told me ‘It’s still early’, well, now it’s too late. Nine years have passed. Maybe we should just tell it like it is.”
