Michael Urie Will Star Opposite Sutton Foster in Once Upon a Mattress on Broadway (Exclusive)

Upcoming Broadway revival Once upon a time there was a mattress has found her prince the Fearless.

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that Michael Urie will reprise his role as the loveable lead in Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer’s treasured musical, returning to the boards this summer for an 18-week engagement. She will be joined by Sutton Foster, in the role of the charmingly sassy Winnifred the Woebegone.

Both were part of this production Once upon a time there was a mattress when it debuted earlier this year to a sold-out run during Encores! series at New York City Center. Urie, 43, and Foster, 49, also worked together Youngerthe cult TV Land series created by Darren Star.

“They work Once upon a time there was a mattress with Sutton at City Center Encores! it was such a joyous and hilarious experience,” Urie tells PEOPLE exclusively.

He adds: “Every night after the bow, as we finally came out, the lights would turn on the audience and we would see smiling happy faces, of all ages, all the way up to the balcony. Somehow, they all looked like kids. I can’t wait to see it again.”

Urie’s return to Broadway comes after a brief absence. Comedic actor — praised for his work on screen in projects like Ugly Betty and Single all the way — played Sir Robin (among other parts) in the recent revival Spamalotalthough he had to leave production in January 2024 to film the second season of AppleTV+ Shrinkage.

Other credits include Chicken in biscuits (2021), Song of the torch (2018), Buyer & Cellar (2013) and How to succeed in business without really trying (2012).

Foster was also recently on Broadway. Earlier this month, the two-time Tony Award-winning theater veteran wrapped up her role as Mrs. Lovett in the film’s revival Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with Aaron Tveit. Before that, she starred in the 2022 remake A musical man opposite Hugh Jackman.

To announce his casting, Urie made a sweet video, which PEOPLE can also premiere, poking fun at his current vacation from New York.

“I’m going back to New York. Who am I kidding? I need all that stress!” he said to the camera, from the bed, before running out of frame to proclaim, “I’m coming, Sutton!”

Was once a mattress follows Winnifred The Woebegone as she competes for the hand of Prince Dauntless after his demanding mother, Queen Aggravain, insists he must marry the “real” princess before anyone else in their kingdom can.

The story is based on Hans Christian Andersen The Princess and the Pea, with book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer.

Rodgers and Barer’s music is known for songs like “Shy” and “In a Little While,” which have become part of the American musical theater lexicon.

Emmy winner Amy Sherman-Palladino, who worked with Foster on Bunheadshe adapted Once upon a time there was a mattress for the upcoming Broadway revival. It will be directed by Tony nominee Lear deBessonet (Into the forest), and the feature-length choreography by Lorin Latarra (Who is Tommy?).

Reviews for Once upon a time there was a mattress opens July 31 at the Hudson Theater in New York, with a premiere scheduled for August 12. It is currently scheduled to run until November 30.

After Broadway, showwith Foster and Urie — will move to Los Angeles for a four-week engagement at the Ahmanson Theater Group. Performances will be held there from December 10 to January 5, 2025.

Additional casting will be announced later.
