Michaela Strachan talks being cancer free after previous breast cancer diagnosis

Michaela Strachan is a recognizable face on our TV screens thanks to her roles in programs such as Autumn timetable, Countryfile and more, where she brings a friendly face and passion for the environment and nature in abundance.

The 57-year-old TV presenter is even hosting a brand new program on Channel 5 this week investigating Britain’s sewage system called Swimming in Sewers: Britain’s Water Scandal. In the show, Michaela will explore ‘Wet Wipes Island’ and Lake Windermere and meet campaigners who want a better system.

Away from her television career, Michaela was also honest about her private life. The television host was diagnosed with breast cancer and in early 2014, after the diagnosis, she underwent a double mastectomy.

Speaking to You magazine then, Michaela spoke about her emotions when she was advised to have surgery. “The tears started as the doctor tried to tell me what was going to happen next,” she said. “But I only took every fifth word or so. The only word that registered was ‘cancer’.”

Michaela continued: “I couldn’t get over the fact that on Monday morning I was seemingly healthy, by Tuesday I had cancer and by Wednesday I was talking about a double mastectomy.”

Most recently, in May 2022, she spoke to Woman&Home magazine, explaining to the publication, “Going through breast cancer also made me stronger. It gave me more resilience and made me appreciate my life more because I realize that something could have ended it early and that is a shock.”

She continued: “I often forget I had breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy and I have slightly funny breasts, but other than that, that’s it. I’ve been incredibly lucky.”

Thankfully, after several challenging years, Michaela is now cancer free. In 2019, the television station revealed that she stopped taking her medication early. “I gave it up because I wanted to start 2019 without drugs,” she explained to iN10. “I think a lot of these numbers, like five years, are not definitive and mentally I wanted to go into a year off Tamoxifen.

“I’ve had six-monthly check-ups and the risk of anything coming back is so low. Anyone can be unlucky and get another bout of unrelated cancer, but the chance of my cancer coming back is very small.”
