Michelle Yeoh Says She ‘Confused’ Emma Stone When Handing Over Her Best Actress Oscar – Here’s Why 

Michelle Yeoh explains why Emma Stone was presented with the Oscar statuette by Jennifer Lawrence at the 96th Academy Awards.

Yeoh, Lawrence and fellow past Oscar winners Charlize Theron, Sally Field and Jessica Lange were in attendance at Sunday’s Best Actress ceremony. Each gave a short speech about this year’s nominees — Stone, Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller and Carey Mulligan — before Poor people the actress was declared the winner.

As the now two-time Oscar winner took the stage, she told the women that her Louis Vuitton dress had ripped before she approached Yeoh, who was holding the statuette.

Yeo, still holding the Oscar, walked over to Lawrence, who took it from her hands and gave it to Stone. After Stone said, “Thank you,” she and Lawrence shared a laugh before hugging each other.

Exchange prompted moviegoers to express their confusion onlinewhich is why Yeoh clarified in an Instagram post on Monday.

“Congratulations Emma!! I confused you but I wanted to share that glorious moment when I presented you with the Oscar together with your best friend Jennifer!! She reminded me of my Bae Jamie Lee Curtis ♥️✨ always there for each other!! 😘 😘😘” , Yeoh wrote. The post included a picture of Yeoh grinning from ear to ear as Lawrence handed the Oscar to Stone.

Yeoh won Best Actress in 2023 for her work on Everything everywhere and at once. Curtis also starred in the film and won for Best Supporting Actress. Stone and Lawrence are also longtime friends who met through Woody Harrelson.

The onstage exchange seemingly didn’t go down well with Stone, who gave a speech recognizing her cast and crew members.

“The other night I was in a panic, as you can see, it happens a lot. Maybe something like this could happen, and [director] Yorgos [Lanthimos] he said to me: ‘Please get out of it’. And he was right, because it’s not about me. It’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts. And that’s the best part of filmmaking. We’re all in this together,” Stone said.

Lawrence also expressed gratitude to her husband, Dave McCary, and their daughter, Louise Jean McCary. After the ceremony, the couple was seen celebrating their win at various Oscar afterparties.
