In a statement received by People, the Ministry of Health and Human Services in Michigan (MDHHS) noted that the person received a transplant at the Ohi Hospital in December before died next month.
“I can confirm that the resident of Michigan died of rabies in January 2025. The person was a recent recipient of organ transplants, and a public health investigation found that they had contracted rabies over the transplanted organ,” said spokeswoman Lynn Sutfin Ue -Poruci.
“The organ transplant was carried out at the Ohi Hospital in December 2024. The Ministry of Health and Human Services in Michigan cooperated closely with the Health Department in Ohi and centers for the control and prevention of illness (CDC) on the investigation,” the statement added.
The patient and the type of organs that are transplanted are not identified.

Preventive care after exposure, if appropriate, it was secured,” it concluded.
The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department added in a statement received by people, “The recipient received care in Lucas County in Ohi, where they died. A multi-state public health investigation was conducted to determine the risk of presenting the recipient and did not find risk to the general public.”
“Since the recipient was a resident of Michigan, this will not reflect as a case with human rabies in Ohi. No residents of Lucas district have contracted or died from rabies,” the health department added.
