The singer collapsed shortly after performing with legendary band Carimi during their anniversary reunion in Paris, France, the Haitian Times reported. His wife, Vanessa Fanfan, is pregnant and due to give birth in December 2022, and his musician father, Lionel “Père Nol” Benjamin, who is known as Santa Claus in Haiti with his Christmas song Abdenwèl, has outlived you.
A Brief History of Mikaben
Michael “Mikaben” Benjamin was born in Port-au-Prince in 1981. He started writing songs at the age of 15 and is now one of the most successful artists in Haiti. He honed his musical skills while attending college in Montreal, Canada. The late famous singer is fluent in 4 languages - Spanish, Creole, English and French – and can play a variety of instruments including piano, drums, guitar and bass.
After winning fourth place in the competition, he began a solo career, releasing his second album in 2004 and gaining fans in Haiti, Europe, the United States and the French Caribbean. He and his cousin David Dupoux created Krezi Mizik and recorded two albums. In 2009, he continued to perform solo and continued as a producer with artists such as Carimi and T-VIce. After the 2010 earthquake, he recorded Ayti Se (It’s Haiti) and sang it in front of former President Bill Clinton and a mourning crowd at the memorial of the disaster that killed more than 300,000 people and 1 , 5 million people have to be displaced.
The artist confirmed to the Palm Beach Post after the earthquake that he was in the mountains at the time of the disaster. He founded Ti Souf Ayiti, an organization in partnership with the country’s Ministry of Culture. Mikaben and other earthquake survivors sang their songs in hospitals, orphanages and refugee camps.
Reactions to Mikaben’s death on Twitter
Several fans and celebrities expressed their condolences after learning of his passing. Several individuals have also posted footage of him performing during his last performance, expressing surprise that the artist passed away so soon. Mikaben’s death was confirmed on Twitter by social media influencer Carel Pedre and Frantz Duval, editor of Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste. After the singer fell, Duval, who was tweeting live from the venue, warned followers that something was wrong, while singer Mickael Guirand tried to take control, saying:
“The concert is over. We have to leave the room. It’s quite complicated.”
The musician appeared to have collapsed as he left the stage after finishing a performance in Paris. Carel Pedre announced the singer’s death after revealing that he had undergone CPR. His cause of death has yet to be confirmed as of this writing, but some media sources claim that Mikaben died of cardiac arrest. Benajmin married his wife Vanessa in November 2020 and the couple has a daughter in 2021.
