Mike Soutar: Amazing facts about the Dundee businessman who looks on The Apprentice
1 – The first days of school in FifeBetween 1978 through 1984, the businessman attended Glenrothes High School in Fife.
He was a student at South Parks Primary School.
2 – Teaching aspirationsMike said in a 1997 profile that he had wanted to be a PE teacher.
“I’d had an idea at school that I wanted to be a PE teacher,” he explained, “but when I went along to the one college in Scotland that offered a course in it, I didn’t like it all that much.”
3 – He began his career at DC Thomson.Mike followed the teams around before reporting back on their accomplishments and failings in the notorious boardroom on Thursday’s episode of The Apprentice.
But the TV personality is no stranger to the job hunt, having gone through a similar process when he first began out in journalism after concluding a career as a teacher wasn’t for him.
“I saw an ad for editorial assistants at DC Thomson in Dundee in the local paper and got really excited about it,” he said.
“What DC Thomson did was hire six people every three months and fire four at the end of that time.”
“I was offered a job and was one of the candidates.”
4 – Horoscopes to pop editorshipMike learnt his profession writing beauty advice and horoscopes for a magazine called Secrets (as did Hollywood star Alan Cumming for the Evening Telegraph).
Then, at the age of 17, he was appointed to the magazine’s beauty editor.
“After three months, I was promoted to fiction editor for Patches, a teenage girls’ magazine, and then to assistant pop editor.”
“Later, when the editor of Patches became the editor of Jackie, she took me with her to become the pop editor there.”
5 – He was a cover boy for Jackie. In a photo article for Jackie, Mike provided readers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the magazine’s offices.
“…introduced by the hostess with the mostest, posing Pop Ed, Mikey!” stated the text.
Photos show him clowning around the office and chatting with coworkers.
6 – Getting noticed by Smash Hits and FHM magazineMike left DC Thomson for a brief stint as a press officer for Virgin Records in order to relocate to London.
Aside from working alongside music great Roy Orbison, he didn’t appreciate the role.
“I felt like I was a glorified double-glazing salesman,” he once said.
