It’s been a year since Miley Cyrus dropped her infectious — and hugely successful — empowerment anthem “Flowers.”
On Saturday, the 31-year-old singer marked the anniversary on Instagram with several black-and-white photos of herself and, fittingly, a flower.
In one photo, he is holding a prop, and in the other, he is posing with it on top of his head.
Along with the pictures, Cyrus shared a short but sweet message about the song, writing, “One year ago today ‘Flowers’ started making people happy and that makes me happy.”
“I love you. Thank you,” she added before signing the message with “XO MC.”

“Flowers” — in which Cyrus emphasizes her independence, singing “I can buy myself flowers” and “I can take myself dancing” — was the first single for Summer vacation without endwhich the singer called a love letter to Los Angeles.
After appearing on streaming platforms, “Flowers” struck a chord with listeners, spending eight weeks at the top of the US Board charts and skyrocketed to the top of Spotify’s charts — and broke a record in the process.

The song became the most streamed song in a single week in the app’s history, surpassing the previous record holder, BTS’s “Butter,” and prompted Cyrus to thank both Spotify and her “amazing fans” on social media.
Following the announcement, Cyrus fans speculated that the self-love anthem contained several references to her relationship with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
While talking to British Vogue last June, Cyrus dismissed those rumors, telling the magazine, “I never had to be a master at conning an audience. It will catch fire by itself.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the singer revealed that the upbeat song almost felt completely different.
“I wrote it in a really different way,” Cyrus said British Vogue. “The chorus was originally, ‘I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, but I can’t love myself better than you.'”
“It used to be more, like the 1950s,” she continued. “The saddest song. Like, ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better.'”
Cyrus added: “The song is kind of fake it till you make it. who I’m a big fan of.”
