Milla Jovovich Reveals Her Fifth Element Dye Job Made Her Hair Fall Out in Clumps

Mill Jovovich’s appearance Fifth element No less than an iconic. But according to the actress, characteristic – and much replicated – the hairstyle came at a price.

In French director Luc Besson from 1997, a cult classic, Jovovich played Leeloo, a cosmic being who represents the only defense of the universe against the giant evil fire of the ball. As Jovovich explained in an interview GqBesson wanted her character’s hair to be a color “which she had never been seen before.”

“They came up with this florescent orange and blond roots,” she recalled. “It was almost like people who work on roads at night when they need to see them to wear such an orange that cars don’t hit you.”

Jovovich, who is now 49 years old, initially her naturally dark hair was erupted and colored for her role. But, she said, “in practice it was difficult to follow.”

“What we didn’t understand at the time was that my hair was growing very quickly,” she explained.

Jovovich said her roots began to grow every week while shooting. “Literally every week you would start to see, like that of a little dark hair,” she recalled. “They kept trying to touch him, but you have to be very sensitive.”

The actress revealed that the damage to her hair from repeated whitening and dying began to fall out in the bunches.

“So we had to follow me,” she admitted.

The change from Jovovich’s real hair in the wig was noticeable on the screen. But, she said, her first appearance in Perica in the movie was timed so that it came after her character was showering.

“So somehow it made sense that it was a bit, like a poofier and a more clean look,” she said.
