Millie Bobby Brown Claims Stranger Things Has Limited Her Creatively: ‘Thank You and Goodbye’

Stranger Things made Millie Bobby Brown a household name when she was just 12 years old — now the 19-year-old actress is ready to move forward with a career outside the universe of the Netflix hit.

Comparing how she feels ahead of the show’s final season to how she feels as a high school senior, Brown said Glamour: “When you’re ready, you say, ‘Okay, let’s do it. Let’s tackle this last senior year. Let’s get out of here.'”

She continued, “Stranger Things it takes a lot of time to shoot and prevents me from creating the stories I’m passionate about. So I’m ready to say, ‘Thank you and goodbye.'”

Brown noted that, along with the show’s success, she has experienced a lot of public criticism and negative comments over the years.

According to Brown, she was called an “idiot”, “stupid” and a “brat” when she was just 13 – and accused of “trying to steal the thunder” from her colleagues during Stranger Things press tours.

“We’re kids — we talk through each other,” Brown said. “I just got punished for talking too much and sharing words and being too loud.”

“It’s hard to hear that at 13,” she continued. “You say, ‘I don’t ever want to talk again. I don’t want to be a loud person.”

She said she “couldn’t help but think” about those comments whenever she gave other interviews, and it affected the way she presented herself. “So I just remembered to shut up and speak up when someone spoke to me, even though I was dying to join in. I just felt it wasn’t my turn,” Brown said.

However, she said the backlash she received inspired her to take the initiative to protect other child stars in the industry.

“You can’t talk about minor children,” she said Glamour. “I mean, our brains haven’t grown physically yet. To diminish and practically stop someone’s mental growth, take them down, tell them, ‘Hey, listen, you don’t look that great. Why are you wearing that? How dare you think you can handle that? How dare you say that?’”

The actress said that in the end it is the merit Stranger Things for giving her the “tools and resources to be a better actress,” she has no regrets about the series ending because she “will still be able to see” her co-stars.
