Posting on Mind Hacks, scientist Tom Stafford said that most people will think red is closer.
He said that blue “seems deeper or farther away.”
Stafford added: “There’s an incredibly strong illusion of depth – blue and red appear to be at different distances.”
The scientist shared a reverse copy of the image showing a red pupil and a blue socket.
He added: “I can enhance the effect by blinking rapidly, increasing the brightness of the screen, and looking in a dark room.
“The colors appear at different depths, even seeming to slide apart when I move my head from side to side.”
The effect is known as chromostereopsis.
When colors like red and blue are placed next to each other, it’s hard to focus on both.
Color wavelengths stimulate different parts of the eye.
Sometimes it’s hard to read blue text on a red background and vice versa.

This impressive illusion appears to represent a large crowd at a concert, but all is not as it seems.
The incredible images appear to show an extravagant and colorful stage in front of thousands of fans.
But the amazing gig is really just a cotton picker running across the field at night.
