Mindy Kaling’s oldest daughter, Katherine “Kit” Swati may only be 6 years old, but she’s already a little fashionista who knows what she likes.
She also knows what she it doesn’t work as.
“She has a really specific vision of what she thinks is beautiful and what is not beautiful,” Kaling told PEOPLE at Sephoria in Atlanta on Sept. 28. “[A dress is] it’s not glamorous unless it touches the ground. I think it’s because you’re not allowed to wear evening gowns in first class. So it’s like forbidden. So when I go out, if I’m only wearing a mini dress, she says, ‘It doesn’t touch the ground. It’s not nice.’ So she has a lot of strong opinions.”
Kaling, who is also mom to Spencer, 3, and Anna, 7 months, added that her tailor-blessed daughter also has an affinity for the color black, so she’s well on her way to becoming a fashionista and style maven before we know it.

Kit has also dabbled in make-up after watching her famous mum spend so many days and nights in the glamor chair, getting ready for red carpets and events. However, Kaling says she’s not ready to let her daughter run wild in the makeup aisles just yet.
“I thought I was going to wait until my daughter was 13 or 14 before she was even interested,” she told PEOPLE at Sephoria. “But on extremely special occasions, we’ll do some eyeshadow for her birthday party. Because I know it’s a slippery slope. Then it’s like, ‘Well, what about Friday?’ You say, ‘No, no.’ But I think of it more as fun face painting, things like costumes with her that we do once or twice a year and she absolutely loves it.”

Kaling, who was a surprise guest at Sephoria, told PEOPLE that some of her earliest memories of playing with makeup were with her own mother, who was an OB/GYN. Kaling says her mom was always surrounded by female patients who taught her how to apply makeup, and she passed that knowledge on to Kaling when she was a teenager.
“Even though my mom was traditional in a lot of ways, she loved to wear makeup and it really made her feel put together and confident,” Kaling said. “It used to impress me. From a fairly early age she encouraged me to experiment with makeup and always wanted me to look ‘done’. When we looked ‘done’, she felt people took us more seriously.”
The Sexual life of female students the creator, 45, said she hopes to pass on her love of makeup (and skincare!) to her own children.
