Minnie Driver Says She Was ‘Devastated’ When Matt Damon Took New Girlfriend to Oscars After Their Breakup

Minnie Driver reflects on the experience of heartbreak during a major Oscars moment.

Back in 1998, the star was with her at the Oscars Good Will Hunting to the cast and crew as her Best Supporting Actress nomination was among the film’s nine nominations.

When the Instagram account Movie Shmood shared a throwback shot of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck winning Best Original Screenplay at the ceremony in October, Driver reacted in the comments section by noting her facial reaction in the audience.

“My face 😂😂😂😂❤️,” she wrote.

Driver, now 53, also wrote in the comments section, as captured and shared on the site Comments By Celebs, in response to a fan who remarked that “Minnie looks so sad.”

She wrote that ex-boyfriend and costar Damon, who is 53 today, recently broke up with her, making the celebratory moment bittersweet.

Damon’s rep did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

“Matt ended our relationship a few weeks before this and was at the Oscars with his new girlfriend… I was devastated,” she wrote. “I wish I could have celebrated more because it was an amazing moment for all of us and for this wonderful film!”

Driver previously spoke about her split from Damon, who is now married to wife Luciana Barroso.

She said Party tonight last year when their romance fizzled ahead of that year’s awards season, it made for a “surreal” experience.

“I don’t care who you are, it’s agony and it’s like a weird, surreal dream,” Driver said of the public breakup at the time. “But I know he didn’t put that picture there. It’s so tricky, because it wasn’t intentional, he couldn’t help how famous he became and how his life was taken over, the same way mine was.”

Added Driver, “It’s funny now, when I think about walking past the magazines in my local supermarket at midnight with my best friend, we were like, ‘Do you see this? This is super weird.’ My friend Alexandra said, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe this is happening, like, I feel like we’re in a movie. I would totally watch this movie, even though I know you’re super heartbroken, but this is really weird.’ ”

Driver marked her anniversary last month with her partner, director Addison O’Dea.

“Today is our anniversary. Five years filled with laughter, sadness, creativity and becoming our little tribe of 4 (counting Bob) Here we are on our first official date, which was a v. glam affair, and you made me laugh so hard I spilled a stitch in this beautiful dress. Slide 2 is who we really are: happy, eating, by the sea. I love you @addisonodea.”
