Miranda Tapsell News

Four years ago, Miranda Tapsell prepared herself for a backlash when she spoke out against how the media had been fanning the flames of bigotry and xenophobia on a mock breakfast TV show.

In an interview with David Wenham for ABC TV’s The ABC Of…, she said, “I was so surprised by how people reacted to it.” In the scenario, comedians Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan made fun of the breakfast television business on the ABC TV comedy programme Get Krack!n.

The final edition of the show’s 2019 season featured Tapsell, a Larrakia woman from Darwin, and episode co-host Nakkiah Lui, a Gamilaroi and Torres Strait Islander.

In a heart-stopping closing scene, Tapsell rises to her feet and interjects, delivering a scorching monologue against the media’s attacks on underprivileged people because she is tired of listening to three white, fake experts give their opinions on whether racism exists. “Because we are passing away in infancy, in detention, and decades before you, and you should be as furious about that as I am.”

When asked about the piece, Tapsell remarked that the crowd response that followed was unexpected. I expected a bunch of death threats and, you know, people finding out my address, but instead I got so much support,” she says.

“I had all these individuals posting and contacting me at once, saying, ‘I will now take the baton.’ All these people were shouting ‘yes!’ at the same time. The fact that so many people pledged to do so and declared that they would do so was heartening and meaningful.

Perhaps it had simply been sitting there all this time. I considered all the instances in which I had been wronged or mistreated and had harboured resentment towards others.

It was cathartic for me because I had been upset for all the other Aboriginal women who had suffered terrible things. She said she felt “completely out of my body” in the moments after filming.

“It was as if I hadn’t been present when we did it, and then all of a sudden they called ‘cut,’ and you know, people didn’t know what to do with themselves at the conclusion of it because it was like, there was this energy, and it wasn’t anything bad at all,” Tapsell.
