The 1997 French edition of the novel, Survivre Avec Les Loups (Surviving with Wolves), was adapted into the film of the same name.
Despite the book’s popularity, critics noted logical and historical errors. Henryk M. Broder questioned Defonseca’s story in 1996 for Der Spiegel. Jane Daniel posted a christening certificate from a Brussels church for a Monique De Wael and registration from an elementary school near the De Waels’ house in late February 2008. Le Soir, Belgium’s national newspaper, announced the results. Belgia’s foremost Holocaust historian, Dr. Maxime Steinberg, pointed out the story’s historical flaws.
Defonseca admitted to Le Soir on February 29, 2008, that she fabricated the story after being presented with “irrefutable” evidence. The author said, “The book is a tale, my story.” “My reality isn’t real. Sometimes I can’t differentiate truth from my imagination.” Defonseca told Le Soir she wanted to forget her identity because she was called “the traitor’s daughter.”
