Mohammad Khairullah News
The belated end of the Muslim holy month of Ramzan was celebrated at the White House this week, but the New Jersey mayor was barred from entering. He demanded Tuesday (local time) that the administration end a federal “watch list” that he says illegally targets Muslims and others.
Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah and several other speakers criticized the list as illegal, racist and unconstitutional at a press conference held in South Plainfield by the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ). They also demanded that the US Secret Service and other federal organizations stop using and disseminating the list, which the organization says has more than 1.5 million names and is primarily “Arabic.”
CAIR urged the Biden administration to prevent the FBI from releasing information from a database of hundreds of thousands of people known as the “Terrorism Detection Data Set.” Khairullah was informed that a person with his name and date of birth was in a data set obtained by CAIR lawyers in 2019.
Khairullah claimed that shortly before he arrived at the White House for the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration on Monday, he received a call from the White House informing him that he had been denied entry by the Secret Service and that he could not attend the event. Biden told hundreds of guests.
“There is no reason to believe that I am an insecure person,” Khairullah added, adding that he had no idea why his information was on the list and that no one in the federal government would tell him. Khairullah mentioned that he went through certain “humiliating” events when he was detained and interrogated while he was travelling.
Khairullah, who was elected in January to serve a fifth term as mayor of his city, said: “I am not disappointed that I am not in the White House. It has to do with human rights. An event like this makes me question the progress I thought we had made, as I have a platform to discuss this issue, but over 1.5 million people don’t.
According to Selaedin Maksut, executive director of the CAIR chapter, there is no transparency about how and why people are added or removed from the list, and there is no legal recourse for those who want their names removed.
“Two decades after 9/11, the damage caused by watch lists is still evident. We continue to see how this interferes with the civil rights of American Muslims and Americans in general, according to Maksut. Khairullah has been removed from the White House complex, a Secret Service spokeswoman said, but declined to provide details. Beyond that, the White House declined to comment.
