I salute their creativity and spirit,” the prime minister tweeted. India’s second soft landing attempt, Chandrayaan-3, is the country’s third lunar mission and a follow-up to Chandrayaan-2, which failed to soft-land in September 2019.

If all goes according to plan, the Chandrayaan-3 lander, Vikram, is scheduled to land on the moon on August 23 at around 5.47 pm after traveling for 40 days and covering more than 3.8 lakh kilometers.

For ideal conditions, the estimated landing time is Thursday, July 13. The launch of LVM3 on Friday at 14:35 will be the first step in that direction, and the countdown to that launch began on Thursday. The satellite will be under the guidance of Istrac’s Bengaluru center as it performs many Earth-bound maneuvers.

According to the original schedule, five of these moves will be performed on different days until July 31. At the end of the last operation around the Earth, the spacecraft is expected to reach an apogee (farthest point from the Earth) of about one million kilometers.

The spacecraft will then continue its ascent toward the Moon, known as the trans-lunar insertion phase, and is expected to enter lunar orbit 5.5 days later. After inserting the craft into lunar orbit, Isro will perform a series of maneuvers to move it into a circular orbit of 100 km, where the lander will detach and then increase its height to move into an elliptical orbit with a close approach to the moon from about 30 km. The lander will touch down here and the rover will then go outward.

Unlike Chandrayaan-2, where the landing was planned for a period when it can be monitored by the Madrid Ground Station (JPL). What will they do?

Exoplanets are planets that orbit stars other than the Sun and have recently piqued the interest of scientists looking for signs of extraterrestrial life.

Vikram is also carrying four payloads, one of which will study lunar earthquakes, two will examine how the Moon’s surface allows heat to pass through it, three will investigate the plasma environment, and the fourth will help accurately measure the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

The two payloads on Pragyan will use X-ray and laser technology to investigate the composition of the Moon’s surface. The area near the South Pole was chosen by Isro for landing because it is of great interest due to the many permanently shadowed craters that could contain water molecules. It is interesting to recall that the Indian Chandrayaan-1 was the first spacecraft that definitively confirmed the existence of water on the Moon.
