Moment driver ploughs into cyclist sending him somersaulting into air – before speeding off as he lay ‘paralysed’

THIS is the moment a drug driver crashed into a cyclist and flung him into the air – before speeding off as he lay “paralysed”.

Danial Arshad, 24, was under the influence of cannabis while behind the wheel of his car when he hit cyclist Nicholas Cooper head-on.

The CCTV footage shows Arshad getting impatient with the vehicle not moving at the traffic light and bypassing them to rush through the junction.

However, Arshad failed to see Mr Cooper approaching from the other direction and plowing directly into the oncoming cyclist in Blackburn, Lancashire, in August 2023.

Mr. Cooper falls to the ground behind Arshad’s vehicle and begins to jerk and struggle to move on the road as Arshad disappears from view.

After the crash, he suffered serious injuries, including broken ribs and spine and a collapsed lung.

The cyclist was later said to have been “lucky not to have died” and had faced a serious risk of paralysis during his hospital stay.

He said in a statement read to the court that he felt he had “partially died in the incident” and that he “regrets the loss of who I used to be”.

Despite the brutal injuries sustained by Mr Cooper, Arshad avoided jail after appearing at Preston Crown Court on Monday (October 7).

The drug driver pleaded guilty to causing serious injuries by careless driving and was subsequently sentenced to a 10-month suspended sentence.

In mitigation, Arshad’s lawyer said he had shown remorse for the incident, describing it as “the worst mistake of my life”.

During sentencing, Judge Richard Gioserano said: “Mr Cooper was very lucky not to die and this was of course a very heavy blow and all because you were impatient to get around a car which had stopped at the lights.

“Your view was limited by the car that stopped and you were under the influence of cannabis to some extent.

“You are of former good character and sincerely repentant, and you continue to show it.”

Arshad will serve a 10-month sentence suspended for two years, with conditions including 15 days of rehabilitation and 300 hours of unpaid work.

He will also be banned from driving for three years and will have to retake his test to get his driver’s license back.
