Lineker and Lampard were joined in the studio by Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Alex Scott.

And the banter flowed naturally as the quartet gave sharp insights into the exciting Euro group stage match.

But Lineker made a mistake at one point because he accidentally insulted Lampard.

The presenter pointed out that there was a fan screen in the background of the BBC’s outdoor studio, which he was unable to view.

Lampard joked that if the screen was removed you would only be able to see the back of his head anyway.

And then Lineker stepped in with an ill-timed joke about baldness.

Lineker said: “The Brandenburg Gate over there, we should take that screen off and see all the players.

“But if they took the screen off, they wouldn’t be able to watch the game.”

Lampard interjected: “You would see my head! They wouldn’t show up for that!”

Lineker joked: “No, you’re right, nobody wants to see the back of your head these days! It’s safe.”

Lampard didn’t seem to see the funny side as his smile quickly disappeared.

Fans certainly found it hilarious, with one saying: “Lampard sent me off realizing it was a bald joke.”

Another stated: “This is literally the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, brings tears to my eyes.”

One added: “Gary Lineker just totally embodied Frank Lampard on live TV. Lampard’s face is killing me. Smoke.”

Lineker went on to talk about the incident on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football Podcast.

And the host admitted that an apology to Lampard will follow.

Lineker said: “Obviously Frank’s a bit thin, I’m a bit thin, and I thought that for everybody actually.

“But when it came out, it came out a little wrong. And you know that thing Frank does when he’s smiling and then suddenly he’s not smiling?

“Frank is having a lot of fun, he won’t mind. I have to admit, when I got back to the hotel, I saw it on social media and thought, ‘Oh you fucking idiot.’

“I felt very bad, I will have to apologize. I’ll apologize because it wasn’t intentional, but I realize how funny it was. These things happen on live television.”

How fans and pundits reacted to Southgate playing Foden on the left wing

GARETH SOUTHGATE was widely criticized for his use of Phil Foden after an uninspired 1-0 Euro 2024 opener against Serbia.

The Premier League Player of the Year had a terrific season at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in another title-winning season.

Foden often shone brightest as a number 10, but was allowed to roam freely behind Erling Haaland to cause maximum chaos.

Despite making a staggering 13.2km move in England’s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia, fans and pundits alike were left frustrated by Foden’s isolation on the left wing.

After the game. the former England star said: “I don’t think Phil Foden played well, he didn’t get into it.”

Micah Richards added: “It gets me when I see a player of this quality in and out of games.”

Cesc Fabregas demanded Foden “be more like Jude Bellingham” and “demand” the ball, while Rio Ferdinand claimed the City ace “allows” the Real Madrid star to be a “dominant” figure.

Fans, meanwhile, fear Southgate is “turning Foden into Mason Mount” and are demanding the Three Lions boss find a way for both he and Bellingham to shine together.

SunSport columnist Jack Wilshere reckons Southgate could play BOTH as a No.10, with Declan Rice deep in the No.6 position.

The former Arsenal star said: “When Bellingham get the ball, even if it’s just lending it to Foden to get it back, or vice versa, they want to combine and make something happen.

“We have to pass them between the lines and receive them on the half turn, play forward.

“As I said before the tournament, I believe I can play in the same team, as two No.10s, with Declan Rice as the only seed — especially in the group games.”
