In the early 1990s, Monie Mohsin began writing the satirical column “Dairy Products for Social Butterflies,” which appeared in The Friday Times and became popular around the world. In an interview, she explained how she came up with the idea for the column. She went on to describe what a “social butterfly” is, saying:

In the early 1990s, I overheard a conversation between two ladies at a lunch in Lahore, discussing the “nuances” of shawls. That’s when an idea for a vicious social satire hit me, and I wrote it as a column for fun. Butterfly is a privileged woman who represents a part of our society that is not yet engaged in anything meaningful. ”

Moni Mohsin wrote her debut novel “The End of Innocence” in 2006. She subsequently published a comedy novel, Dairy for Social Butterflies (2008). Later, she wrote novels such as “The Gentle Hook” (2011), “Duty Free” (2011), “The Butterfly Returns” (2014), and “The Perfect Integrity of Ruby R.” (2020) and Between You, Me and Four Walls: The Social Butterfly Announcement (2022). As a freelance writer, she publishes columns on politics, society, lifestyle and class.
