Monty Williams News

In their most recent effort to reclaim their NBA relevance, the Detroit Pistons made a risky move. According to two people with knowledge of the matter, Detroit and former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams have reached an agreement. Williams agreed to a six-year contract, one of the sources told The Associated Press on Wednesday night while speaking on the condition of anonymity because the arrangement had not yet been made public.

Phoenix dismissed Williams two weeks ago or more, a year after he was named the league’s coach of the year and two years after the team made it to the NBA Finals.

The Suns, who were eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals two years in a row after falling to Milwaukee in the NBA Finals in 2021, were led by the 51-year-old Williams, who won 63% of his games during four regular seasons with the team.

Under Dwane Casey, who resigned as coach with one year remaining on his contract to accept a position in the front office, Detroit lost 30% or fewer games for the fourth consecutive season while winning an NBA-low 17 games last season.

Victor Wembanyama, a 7-foot-3 French pro who was projected to go first overall and was a 19-year-old super talent, was not selected by the Pistons in the draught lottery, giving them the No. 5 overall pick for the second consecutive year.

Detroit, a three-time NBA champion team, has only qualified for the playoffs twice over the past 14 years. The Pistons haven’t won a postseason game since the 2008 season when they made it to the Eastern Conference finals for the sixth consecutive year as part of an incredible run that included the 2004 NBA championship and a narrow loss to the eventual champions.

The Nos. 5 and 13 overall picks from last summer, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, respectively, did offer some promise for the future with their performance. After participating in only 12 games, Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall choice in 2021, had his second season curtailed by shin surgery.

Bojan Bogdanovic, Isaiah Stewart, James Wiseman, and Marvin Bagley all had career-high scoring averages. In nine seasons as the NBA’s head coach, Williams had a 367-336 record with a 29-27 postseason mark. He worked for the New Orleans Pelicans for five years before they sacked him in 2015 despite his 173-221 record and two playoff appearances.

Williams’ wife, Ingrid, passed away from wounds she received in a car incident in which she was struck head-on by an SUV that crossed the centre line after losing control when he was an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016.
