1st Motor City Open, 1949 – 11 holes
In the 1949 Motor City Open, golfers Lloyd Mangrum and Cary Middlecoff played an extra 11 holes to settle a tie. It gets dark and instead of continuing the next day, they decide to share the title. This surprised most fans. Golfers don’t share titles easily. These two men show respect for each other.
2nd Mayakoba Golf Classic, 2012 – 8 holes
In 2012, at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, John Huh, who was only 21 years old, defeated Robert Allenby in a playoff. They played eight extra holes and suddenly John made enough shots to win. Although he was young and new to the PGA Tour, John showed that he was a talented golfer. This incident shows that golf is unpredictable.
3rd Phoenix Open, 1983 – 8 holes
In 1983, at the Phoenix Open, four players had to play eight holes to decide the winner: Bob Gilder, Johnny Miller, Mark O’Meara and Rex Caldwell. Bob Gilder ended up winning. It was a very cool moment in PGA history even though not many people watched his win at the time. This is also one of the most memorable matches in PGA history.
4th Quad Cities Open, 1981 – 8 holes
In 1981, at the Quad Cities Open on the PGA Tour, Dave Barr, an American, won the trophy after going on to play eight more holes in a playoff. He then defeated four players, Dan Halldorson, Woody Blackburn, Frank Conner and Victor Regalado.
5th Greater Milwaukee Open, 1978 – 8 holes
In 1978 at the Greater Milwaukee Open, Lee Trevino and Lee Elder had a playoff. Trevino made an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole to force a playoff. But on the eighth playoff hole, Trevino missed a short putt and Lee Elder won with a good putt from 12 feet.
6. Azalea Open Invitational, 1965 – 8 holes
In the 1965 Azalea Open Invitational, Dick Hart defeated Phil Rodgers in a playoff. During the initial phase, Hart nearly missed the entry deadline, but ended up winning. In the playoff, Hart made a good putt on the eighth hole, even though he was out of bounds.
