Mridula met Pankaj for the first time on May 24, 1993, at the wedding of her brother, who married Pankaj Tripathi’s sister. In an interview, she shared her memories:
This is my brother’s Tilak (engagement ceremony). As I was going to a small room on the terrace to get dressed, this boy with hazel eyes, brown hair and a beard walked past me. Those eyes would follow me throughout the event. “
Mridula was in Class 9 and Pankaj was in Class 12 at that time. They became friends and soon fell in love with each other. In an interview, when Pankaj was asked about his first meeting with Mridulla, he said:
My sister is getting married. But her in-laws wanted to build a toilet before my sister went there. This was long before “Toilet Ek Prem Katha”. My friend went to her in-laws’ house to see the renovations being done. He saw a girl there and came over to tell me about her. He said she was beautiful. Walks like a deer. I heard his praise and got lost. I married her 11 years later. We only met each other from 1993 to 2004. I used to go to drama school back then. That era was very different for me because there were no cell phones. The letter could not be written because it seemed anyone in the house could open it and read it. After completing his studies, Mridula moved from Kolkata to Delhi to work as a teacher. At that time, Pankaj was also pursuing acting courses at the National School of Drama in Delhi. Mridula said in an interview that her parents were unaware of her relationship with Pankaj Tripathi and had been looking for a groom for her. At that time, Pankaj also accompanied his sister and brother-in-law to the groom-to-be’s house. Addressing the same issue in an interview, Mridula said,
Pankaj accompanied my brother and sister-in-law to the groom-to-be’s residence. He came and told me that this is a good match for me and I will definitely get a lot of ‘bhautik sukh’. I didn’t know much Hindi at that time and asked what that meant and he said “material happiness”. At that point I felt like I was losing something very precious.
