Hope Rowe, 32, from nearby Whitechapel, has been charged with murder and possession of a bladed object.
Judge Richard Marks remanded Rowe in custody after he appeared at the Old Bailey on September 18.
The court was told there was a “verbal disagreement” between Rowe and Charlotte during the birthday party.
Rowe allegedly pulled a knife from her purse before stabbing Charlotte to death in the lobby of the apartment building.
Prosecutor Charlotte Newell KC said Charlotte was with her child at the time.
Rowe will next appear at a plea and pretrial hearing on December 2, with a tentative trial date set for June 9 of next year.
Scotland Yard previously said the suspect and Charlotte knew each other and officers were not looking for anyone else.
Charlotte’s cousin Jessie McBride said Charlotte’s son witnessed the horrific stabbing
Jessie started a GoFundMe to support her family after the tragedy.
She said: “Charlotte was an amazing woman – she had drive, determination and a really big heart.
“Charlotte fought so hard to make sure her son had the things he needed. She was his biggest supporter and absolutely adored him.”
Jessie added: “She was loved by so many people and will be greatly missed.”
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dalloway said: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of a young woman’s life.
“It seems that those involved know each other and were present at the address during the evening.
“Although this investigation is at an early stage, we have made significant progress.
“At this time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.
“Officers will continue to carry out vital work at the site and I would ask residents for their patience while we do this.
“I would also ask if anyone has seen anything or has any information that could help us, please come forward.”
Detective Superintendent Mike Cagney said: “My thoughts are with the family of this young woman at this very difficult time.
“Following this horrific incident, my officers are working closely with our specialist colleagues to understand exactly what happened.
“Over the coming days local officers will be in and around Duckett Street to provide the security the community needs.
“This is also an opportunity for anyone with concerns or any information about this incident to speak to us.”
