hell

Muthappa Rai’s association with the underworld began when he founded a cabaret club called Omar Kayyam in Karnataka. Mutapa said in an interview that due to the large number of gangs in Karnataka in the 1980s, he had to seek help from underworld forces to protect his business. Talking about this, he said,

I didn’t become a part of the underworld willingly. I am drifting in it as I have to come into contact with many underworld gangsters to save my cabaret business from rival businessmen and their gangsters. “

He rose to prominence in the underworld in 1989 when his men murdered prominent gangster SP Jayaraj, chief of the Indira Brigade in Bengaluru, during a hearing in a Bengaluru court. Despite this infamous incident, Mutapa failed to win over the support of other underworld factions. Agni Sridhar, a journalist with a background in Indian gangsters, said in an interview,

Jayaraj was murdered by Rai’s men in broad daylight. Rai subsequently became the chief of Bangalore, but he did not enjoy the support of local gangsters. He could not round them up and appease them. He got a letter from one of them saying they weren’t going to join forces…”

In 1992, Mutapa Rai was accused of murdering an underworld member named Amar Alva. In 1994, he traveled to Mumbai, where he allegedly joined forces with Dawood Ibrahim and his right-hand man Sharad Shetty to expand his influence in Karnataka. Mutapa wanted Agni Sridhar to join forces with him to rule the criminal syndicate in Karnataka; however, Agni refused to do so as he disapproved of Mutapa’s collaboration with Dawood Ibrahim , bringing Mumbai’s gun culture to Karnataka. In 1994, an attempt was made on Mutapa’s life while he was on his way to attend a court hearing in Amal Alwa’s murder case. He was shot five times; however, he survived and was hospitalized, after which he was bedridden for two years.

Police later said Mutapa provided logistical support to Rajan’s men. In 2002, Mutapa Rai contacted a journalist named Daniel George, who was working as a media officer at the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. According to Daniel, Mutapa told him to contact the Indian authorities to help him return to India as the UAE police were looking for him to be involved in illegal activities. Some other sources said the Saudi government extradited him to India after Interpol issued a red notice against him. After returning to India from Dubai, he was interrogated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) and Karnataka Police. He was later imprisoned on trial for eight murders. However, he was acquitted in 2004 as authorities could not find any evidence against him. Rai said he was allowed safe entry into India because he helped Indian intelligence agencies conduct covert operations in Afghanistan.
