My £9.5k car was destroyed in Luton Airport car park fire but insurance won’t pay up – they think it’s MY fault

A WOMAN whose £9,500 car was destroyed in a fire at Luton Airport was left stunned when her insurance company claimed it was her fault.

Cath Glaze said the “traumatic and distressing” experience of losing the engine was only made worse by the rejection of her claim.

Cath and her husband Martyn were enjoying a holiday in Portugal and had left their car at the airport while they were away.

It is now one of nearly 1,500 vehicles still in the burned-out structure.

The couple praised EasyJet and Luton Airport for keeping them informed but said they still had no idea if the car would be “salvageable”.

After discovering the devastating news, the couple contacted their insurers but were stunned to be told they could be held “at fault” for the loss.

Cath told the Mirror: “We contacted our security…[who] have now given us a final settlement offer, which is less than what we would need to purchase a comparable vehicle and does not include the value of personal items.

“Now we don’t have access to a vehicle, so it’s very difficult to carry out our normal day-to-day activities such as shopping, helping with the grandkids or going for a test drive of potential new cars.”

She also claimed that the company would not provide them with a company car and also informed her that she would lose her no-claims bonus due to the fire.

All the while, their settlement offer of £7,000 is £13,000 less than she paid for the car.

Luton Airport said it had passed data on 1,405 cars to the Motor Insurer’s Office.

Director of Operations Neil Thompson added: “We continue to focus on the safety and integrity of the car park.

“This will allow us to carry out a full assessment which, as we said earlier, can only happen when security can be ensured.

“We continue to work incredibly hard to get this information out to insurers as quickly as possible to help them so they can in turn help those affected as soon as possible.”

However, he said he could not give a “definitive timeline” for the assessment to be completed as the airport takes a security-first approach.

It came after officers investigating the fire arrested and questioned an unnamed man in his 30s on suspicion of causing the damage.

In the meantime, the cause of the terrible fire has been discovered, and fire crews are denying rumors that it was caused by an electric vehicle.
