Oakland Raiders
In 2013, he was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round (184th overall) of the NFL Draft as the No. 11 tight end. In 2013, he began his rookie season as the backup tight end to Jaylen Mastrud and caught two passes for 26 yards in the season opener loss to the Indianapolis Colts. On September 29, 2013, he caught an 18-yard pass from Matt Flynn for his first career touchdown. The following week, he made his first start against the San Diego Chargers and caught a 5-yard pass. On November 24, 2013, in the Raiders’ loss to the Tennessee Titans, Rivera was hit by Michael Griffin’s helmet, resulting in a concussion. On November 2, 2014, Rivera finished the game against the Seattle Seahawks with a career-high eight receptions and 38 receiving yards, catching rookie quarterback Derek Carr’s first two touchdown passes of the season. The following week, Rivera caught six passes for 64 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Denver Broncos, but the Raiders lost 41–17. On December 7, 2014, Rivera caught seven passes for 109 receiving yards and a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers, setting a career high.
After a strong career year in 2014, he was considered the starting tight end for the 2015 season, but head coach Jack Del Rio brought in free agent Lee Smith and drafted Clive Wolford in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Although he started the season as Smith’s backup, he ultimately lost the job to rookie Wolford. On November 15, 2015, he had one of his best games of the season, catching a season-high six passes for 46 receiving yards in a 14–30 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. In a Week 14 win over the eventual Super Bowl 50 champion Denver Broncos, he caught three passes for a season-high 49 receiving yards and caught his only touchdown of the season. In 2016, Wolford was listed as the starting tight end for the 2016 season after reports that the Oakland Raiders were looking to trade Rivera. After being unable to find a trade partner, the Raiders decided to keep him on for at least the final year of his rookie contract. Since Wolford was assigned as the starting tight end at the beginning of the season, Rivera did not have one catch until Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens, which ended with a gain of 1 yard. On October 30, 2016, he had his best game of the season, catching 3 passes for 36 yards and catching his first touchdown of the season from Derek Carr.
Jacksonville Jaguars
On March 22, 2017, Rivera signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. After joining the Jaguars, he reunited with his former high school and college teammate Malik Jackson. On September 1, 2017, Rivera was placed on the injured list due to a hand injury. On February 20, 2018, the Jaguars declined his contract option and he became a free agent.
