Justice NV Ramana

NV Ramana is an Indian judge who served as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CGI); he was appointed by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, on 6 April 2021 and assumed office on 24 April 2022. NV Ramana retired from the post of Chief Justice of India (CGI) on 26 August 2022.

Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana also known as NV Ramana was born on 27 August 1957 (65 years old in 2022) in Ponnavaram, Andhra Pradesh. His star sign is Virgo. In 1975, due to the implementation of the Emergency in the country, his father asked him to leave home and live with his aunt. His father gave him 10 rupees and NV Ramana left home. NV Ramana studied at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, where he obtained his B.S. and L.B.A.

Profession

NV Ramana joined the Andhra Pradesh Bar Association on 10th February 1983 and started practicing as an advocate in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He also practised before the Supreme Court of India in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, services and electricity matters. He was appointed as Additional Standing Counsel to the Central Government and also as Standing Counsel for Railways to the Central Administrative Tribunal, Hyderabad. In June 2000, NV Ramana was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. NV Ramana was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in September 2013 and became a Judge of the Supreme Court in February 2014. He is a member of the General Council of the National Law School, India University, Bangalore and the Chairman of the Library Committee of the Indian Law Institute, Delhi.

  • In October 2020, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and his chief adviser Ajeya Kallam accused NV Ramana of having been changing the sittings of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and trying to influence the judges to destabilize the state government. However, the matter was dismissed by the court, and India’s Attorney General KK Venugopal said the matter was “highly improper” and that the Chief Minister’s actions were deliberate disobedience. In addition, KK Venugopal refused to take any action against YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and his advisers.
  • NV Ramana was also embroiled in controversy when a case was filed against his daughters Tanuja and Bhuvana and 11 others in the Guntur Anti-Corruption Bureau in September 2020. The complaint stated that the persons involved had illegally purchased large tracts of land in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, between 2013-2014.

  • Justice Ramana was one of the judges who handled the expedited trial related to restrictions imposed on Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. He was also one of the judges who handled the case to allow 4G mobile internet services in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Justice Ramana specialises in constitutional, criminal, services and inter-state rivers law. He has given several decisions ranging from election issues to including the office of Chief Justice of India in the Right to Information Act. He said –

    RTI should not be used as a surveillance tool.”

  • In 2017, NV Ramana was one of the judges in the Aircel-Maxis deal case. The judge asked prosecutor Anand Grover to file a formal petition urging the court not to hand over the Maran brothers’ properties; however, Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran were released by the court on February 2, 2017.
  • The first E-Lok Adalat was conducted by the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RSLSA) under the guidance of the State Legal Services Authority in August 2020. The E-Lok Adalat was held in different parts of the state like Barmer, Jaisalmer, Sirohi etc. The benches received around 45,000 cases, of which around 33,476 cases were resolved. Justice NV Ramana and several other senior judges of the high court were present at the inauguration ceremony.

  • NV Ramana donated Rs 1 lakh each to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Relief Fund in 2020. The donation was made in the form of cheques and handed over to the authorities concerned.
