Naganathan Pandey

Naganathan Pandi is an Indian athlete who competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He competed in the 400-meter sprint and the 4 X 400-meter relay sprint.


Naganathan Pandi was born on Tuesday, April 23, 1996 (26 years old; as of 2022) in Singapuli Patti village, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu state, India. His zodiac sign is Taurus. He attended KN High School, Kamuthi, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu. He participated in the 1,500-meter race when he was a student; but because he was born in poverty, he did not have a pair of shoes. He used to run barefoot and work as a construction worker on weekends and holidays to support his family. When he qualified for a regional athletic championship, the school gave him a pair of shoes. He received his BA in History from Pasumpon Thiru Muthuramalinga Thevar Memorial College, Kottaimedu, Tamil Nadu.

Naganathan participated in different competitions during his college days and even ran 400 meters in one of the competitions with a time of around 49 seconds. He participated in the All India University Sports Competition in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which made him eligible to apply for state government jobs under sports quota. After clearing the entrance examination, he joined the Tamil Nadu Police as an armed reserve police officer in 2017 and was posted in Chennai. He completes his assignments during the day and trains in the morning and evening. He won gold medals at the State Police Conference in the 2018-2019 season and in the 400m and 4×400m relay at the All India Police Conference in Chandigarh in March 2020. He later won the CM Trophy at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. He won gold medals at the Indian Grand Prix 1 in Patiala in January 2021 and the Tamil Nadu State Competition in Sivakasi in February 2021. In March 2021, he participated in the Federation Cup in Patiala, Punjab, and won a silver medal in the Indian Championships. 400m race. He was selected for the Patiala National Training Camp where he trained for 45 days. He finished third in the trials and was selected for the 4×400m relay team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; however, he did not represent Team India at the Olympics as other athletes were confirmed to compete. He will take gold in the 400m at the Indian Grand Prix in Trivanthapuram in March 2022. He finished seventh in the National Federation Cup in April 2022 at CH Mohammad Koya Stadium, Thanhiparan, Kerala. He participated in the 2022 400-meter race at the 7th International Sprint Relay Cup held at the Ataturk University Stadium in Erzurum, Turkey, in June 2022; however, he qualified for the second round. In June 2022, he finished sixth in the 400m and won the gold medal in the 4×400m relay at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. He participated in the 4 He was selected for the 22nd Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham 4 × 400 meters relay, and won the sixth place on behalf of the team.

  • After he won the gold medal at the All India Police Conference 2020, the police department allowed him to train full-time and only serve as a police officer on important occasions.
