“If I touch something when I’m walking down the street, I’ll be able to feel it and know if it’s a tree, a person, an electrical box, or anything else. I can tell it’s early morning if it’s really quiet, especially along the main road we live on. Nas’s early years were spent in and out of hospitals as physicians made every effort to help her regain her vision.
“I spent years getting surgeries, the majority of them were novel techniques. I have to admit that it was somewhat traumatic. I have clear memories of spending those early years in the hospital. I didn’t want to continue doing this till I was in my mid-teens and told my parents as much. I don’t care whether I get my sight back. I’m overjoyed that it ceased since it fits who I am.
They probably noticed that it didn’t matter because I was at school and participating in extracurricular activities. I was doing well. Apart from the medical treadmill, Tonya, a secretary, and Frank Campanella, a carpenter made a conscious effort to provide their daughter with a normal childhood.
Nas grins and replies, “I grew up in a huge, boisterous Italian family in Sydney’s western suburbs. “Lachie is the twentieth great-grandchild, and I’m one of 12 grandchildren. My mother’s mother is the only remaining grandmother I have, and we are quite close. She took care of my brother and I, picking us up from school and feeding us homemade pasta or pizza for afternoon tea.
