Nat and Alex Wolff on Continuing to Find ‘Balance’ with Each Other Musically: ‘It’s Very Natural’ (Exclusive)

Nat and Alex Wolff know they are better together.

“I never made music without Nat, and that means I never made music,” Alex, 26, tells PEOPLE. “I had one electronic side band, but that was because I had to keep it private on my laptop.”

From Nata’s perspective, “it’s not just because we’re brothers and we have similar tastes that’s why we continue to work together. We both bring different things to the table that I don’t think we would have otherwise.”

“We’re both pushing in different directions and we’re not going down the same path,” he said Which brings me to you the star, 29, adds. “In that way, I think it’s an interesting counterpoint.”

Alex says that the duo is “inspired by similar things and the combination of our two inspirations ends up creating a sound, especially this latest album [Table For Two] it was really just follow what sounds good, follow what sounds good, don’t think about it.”

“I think it has more of a sound than anything we’ve ever done. Like, a more cohesive sound even though the songs are really different and the production can be different. You hear our feelings really clearly,” he continues. “It doesn’t sound so much like mine or Nat’s songs. It sounds like our songs and I think we’ll continue to change our sound with each album.”

Nat also notes that in the end they “ended up meeting in the middle.” And according to Alex, this only further allows them to create a cohesive balance.

“We know each other very well and are aware of each other’s strengths and pitfalls. And we can get into it,” Oppenheimer explains the actor. “It’s hard to explain, except that’s probably why it’s done best in music. It’s not something intellectual. It’s more something musical.”

“If you’re there, you can understand what’s starting to happen between the two of us,” he continues. “We can balance each other out. And also, it’s very natural. It’s not a conscious thing where we’re trying to steer each other or clip each other’s wings. It’s really filling in the gaps.”

Like all siblings, Nat admits the pair sometimes argue, “but we don’t argue when we’re making music together.”

After the Naked Brothers Band era in the mid-2000s, Nat and Alex went out on their own, releasing their debut album Black sheep2011 Although they dropped their EP, Public placesIn 2016, they finally released their second album in June 2023, A table for two.

Now they’re embarking on their first tour together since 2012 — and the experience has been fantastic.

Kicking off their show in Boston on Jan. 21, Alex tells PEOPLE, “It was maybe one of my favorite shows we’ve done since we were young.”

“It was really, really, really fun. The crowd was crazy,” Alex says as Nat continues, “We’re playing with this new guy, Alan [Markley]who’s an amazing keyboard player and singer and also plays a lot of bass in his left hand and can play all the lines on the record in his right hand, so that added a lot.”

Their limited tour of the city was a different experience than past dates, with Alex noting that “when you’re younger it’s harder to connect” with concertgoers. “But I know that now when I talk to fans at a show, you can really talk about what the songs are about and have fun conversations,” he adds. “This last show in Boston was a blast, so I’m really excited for Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Decatur and New York.”
