News about Natasha Alford

Syracuse’s youth find out when award-winning journalist Natasha S. Alford tells them they can be successful at anything. She did, after all, walk in her shoes. Alford graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse in 2004 before beginning her well-known journalism career. She frequently visits downtown New York to encourage young people to follow her ambitions.

Alford is currently a political commentator for CNN and vice president of digital content for theGrio. His work has been published in Vogue, The Guardian and The New York Times. In 2024, HarperCollins will publish his novel “American Negro.”

The scholarships enabled Alford to enter journalism. He now offers scholarships to aspiring high school journalists in Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse as a way to give back to the cities where he found success. In 2021, Alford told Syracuse.com, “I want the kids in the Syracuse City School District to know that they can do whatever they want.”

Students studying Syracuse Media at ITC, Central Syracuse Institute of Technology, Serenity Baxter, Destiny Fernandez, and Nathaniel Teska-Prince, will receive the top three Alford Scholarships. All three are tutored by Jeff Newell, a media communications instructor at ITC, and are alumni of the Syracuse Journalism Lab, an initiative of the Syracuse Press Club that trains young people for careers in journalism and media.

Speaking to the ITC class via Zoom, Alford commented, “Hearing your stories made me proud to be from Syracuse.” “I remember in high school I had some ambitions and wondered if they were even achievable. Where are you from, where am I from? I can confirm from my own experience that anything is possible to achieve. Alford clarified that his scholarship is not just for financial gain.

Alford told the boys, “It’s about giving you a direct connection to me to say, ‘I’m here for you on your path to success, to follow your dreams.'” Think of me as a support system for you. His classmates cheered, clapped and hugged in response to the announcement.
