The National Book Awards has announced its 25 finalists!
The authors – most of whom will be awarded for the first time – were published with The New York Times on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and were selected by a distinguished jury from a long list published in September in The New Yorker, according to a press release.
This year’s list is noteworthy because only two authors on the list of 25 have previously been honored by the National Book Foundation. All of its finalists in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and literature for young people were awarded for the first time, according to the announcement. A total of 1,917 books were submitted for this year’s National Book Award.

Finalists in the fiction category include authors ‘Pemi Aguda and Kaveh Akbar who each debuted with Ghostroots and Martyr!respectively.
Writer Percival Everett was also selected for his novel JamesMiranda July was selected for her book All four and Hisham Matar completes the category with his novel My friends.

Among the young adults’ literature finalists, who will connect with middle and high school students for the Teens Read 2024 National Book Awards on November 19, is Violet Duncan for Buffalo DreamerJosh Galarza for A big cool Dorito ranch in the skyErin Entrada Kelly for The first state of existenceShifa Saltagi Safadi for Kareem Between and Angela Shante for Black girl unpacking.
Finalists in the translated literature category include the return of Leri Price and Samar Yazbek, who were finalists in 2021. Planet of clay. Bothayna Al-Essa and Linnea Axelsson were also awarded in this category for their translations Library of Book Censors and Ædnan. Fiston Mwanza Mujila was also awarded Villain dance and Yáng Shuāng-zǐ is honored for Taiwan travelogue.
The 2024 National Book Awards finalists will read from their work on Tuesday, November 19 at NYU’s annual Skirball event, which will be streamed live and hosted by the award-winning journalist and NPR host A minute has passed Brittany Luse.
They will reunite the following night for the 75th National Book Awards & Benefit Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, where the winners will be announced. Winners will receive $10,000, along with a bronze medal and statue, while finalists will receive $1,000 and a bronze medal.
Barbara Kingsolver to receive National Book Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award: ‘Inspired Generations’
The ceremony will also honor Pulitzer Prize winner Barbara Kingsolver with the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Literature, while W. Paul Coates, publisher and founder of Black Classic Press, will be honored with the Foundation’s Literary Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community.
