National Book Foundation Announces the Longlist for the 2024 National Book Award for Nonfiction

The longlist of the 2024 National Literary Awards for Nonfiction is here!

On Thursday, September 12, the National Book Foundation revealed its 10 nominees for the prestigious award. The announcement of the title comes just weeks before the five finalists will be announced on October 1, ahead of the 75th National Book Awards ceremony and benefit dinner where the winners will be announced on November 20.

Among this year’s nominees is Hanif Abdurraqib There’s always this year: about basketball and ascensionat Rebecca Boyle’s Our Moon: How Earth’s Celestial Companion Transformed the Planet, Guided Evolution, and Made Us Who We AreJason De León Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of People SmugglingEliza Griswold’s Circle of Hope: A Reckoning with Love, Power, and Justice in the American Church and Kate Manne Not slimming down: How to face fat phobia.

Additional five candidates are Salman Rushdie The Knife: Meditations after an Assassination AttemptErnest Scheyder The War Below: Lithium, Copper and the Global Battle to Power Our LivesRichard Slotkin The Great Mess: National Myth and the Battle for AmericaDeborah Jackson Taffa’s Whiskey Tender and Vanessa Angélica Villarreal Magical/Realism: Essays on Music, Memory, Fantasy, and Boundaries.

Ta-Nehisi Coates will present the W. Paul Coates Literary Award at the 2024 National Book Awards.

According to a press release from the National Book Foundation, this year’s Long List includes MacArthur, Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Arts and Knight Science Journalism Fellows — as well as authors who have previously won the Booker Prize, the Kirkus Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Whiting Award and the Pulitzer Prize .

“The 2024 nonfiction longlist includes emerging and established writers, and includes works of memoir, science writing, investigative pieces, and more,” the release said.

“Most of the authors on the Longlist are newcomers to the National Book Awards, with two exceptions — Hanif Abdurraqib was a 2021 National Book Award for Nonfiction finalist and a 2019 Longlister, and Richard Slotkin was a 1993 National Book Award finalist for nonfiction and a 2019 Longlister finalist. National Book Awards for History 1974.”

The National Book Foundation’s latest announcement follows a string of announcements in recent weeks — from announcing the longlist for the 2024 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature to announcing Pulitzer Prize winner Barbara Kingsolver as the recipient of its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Literature.

Also at the 75th National Book Awards & Benefit Dinner in the fall, publisher and activist W. Paul Coates will be presented with the 2024 Literary Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community — presented by his son, Ta-Nehisa Coates.
