Nationwide payment issue means MILLIONS face ‘no cash for Christmas’ as £1,000s of transactions stuck pending

A NATIONWIDE payment problem means millions of Britons could face cash shortages at Christmas.

Thousands of pounds worth of transactions have reportedly been stuck on hold after a technical problem with a major bank.

Nationwide said Thursday it did not know how long it would take for the withheld money to reach bank accounts.

Britons are now panicking that they could end up without money for Christmas, with many saying their paychecks will arrive in their bank accounts in the coming hours.

But the bank said it could not guarantee it would be there.

One customer asked Nationwide: “My payment deadline is tomorrow, which is Friday, if the payments are delayed I’m assuming I won’t have the funds until after Boxing Day?”

The bank responded and said it “doesn’t have an estimated time frame.”

It added: “Salaries have been queued and will arrive as soon as possible.”

One person said: “People can’t access their money three days before Christmas? They’re not even apologizing for the problem.”

Nationwide said: “There has been a delay affecting some incoming and outgoing Faster Payments following an error earlier this evening.

“Payments are now flowing again and all pending payments will be processed shortly.”

Another customer panicked: “I usually get paid at midnight.

“Will this continue if payments are delayed?”

When people asked if they would see the money, the bank simply said, “We will process these payments for you, with the goal of funding the accounts in the next few hours if they are in order.”

A Nationwide spokesman said on Friday morning: “Due to a technical issue, incoming and outgoing Faster Payments were temporarily delayed for a short time yesterday evening.

“No other services were affected and customers were still able to use their cards to pay in stores and online.

“We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Can you claim compensation for delays?

Unlike telecommunication companies, banks do not have a fixed service termination fee scheme.

Depending on whether it affected you, you may be able to get some money back.

It is worth collecting evidence of your problems so that you can make a formal complaint to the bank if necessary.

Try to record when the problems affected you, plus any expenses you incurred as a result.

If your credit score was affected by a service interruption, for example, you received a late payment fee after you were unable to complete a transaction, you should note that as well.

If you spoke to anyone to try to resolve the problem, make a note of their name and when you spoke with them, as well as roughly what you discussed and what they advised you to do.

You can find out how to make a complaint on the Nationwide website.
