The plight of Uttar Pradesh don Ramesh Kalia
introduce
Ramesh Kalia was a notorious extortionist from Lucknow who extorted money on a large scale mainly from contractors and builders in Uttar Pradesh. In 2004, when the Samajwadi Party came to power in Uttar Pradesh, the biggest challenge facing Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was to control the rising crime rate in the state. Especially in the capital city of Lucknow, a crime wave was sweeping across the state at that time. Many criminals including Ramesh Kalia, who was once one of the most feared mafias in the state, had become a headache for the Uttar Pradesh government. The public fear of Kalia was so high that no one dared to testify against him. In September 2004, Kalia was suspected of murdering Samajwadi Party MP Ajit Singh at his birthday party. The news shocked the entire state and people questioned the government’s standards in ensuring the safety of citizens. At that time, Indian police official Navniet Sekera was summoned to Lucknow from Muzaffarnagar to curb the rapid growth of criminal activities. Prior to this, he had already conducted the encounter of more than 40 criminals.
Dramatic Encounter
The incident took place in February 2005 when Kalia demanded Rs 5 lakh from a local builder and called him at a house under construction in Neelmatha area of Lucknow. Kalia had planted his goons at various places in the locality. Now, Navniet Sekera and his police personnel had to adopt a unique strategy to reach Kalia. When it was not possible to reach his base, Sekera prepared a script of police disguised as a marriage procession (Barat). According to this ruse, a woman police officer was dressed as a bride and made to sit in a doli while an inspector was disguised as a groom. A team of armed policemen and inspectors were part of the procession. Led by a band-baaja, the procession reached Ramesh Kalia’s base in Nilmatha. In the operation that lasted for about 20 minutes, more than 50 rounds of fire were exchanged between the police and Kalia gang; killing the dreaded gangster Ramesh Kalia.
