NCERT recommendations for social science textbooks
Recommendations for NCERT textbooks: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in a recent meeting convened in connection with the revision of social science textbooks has made several recommendations. The first salient recommendation was regarding the replacement of India with Bharat in textbooks from classes 5 to 12.
According to reports, NCERT has appointed 25 focus groups for revision of textbooks in December 2021. Chairman of the committee Issac stated that India is a name given by foreigners and the real name of the country is Bharat. He further added that the commission has recommended that Bharat be the name of the country in textbooks from class 5 to 12.
Issac further pointed out that current textbooks focus on the country’s failures which create mental retardation among students. He stressed that history textbooks focus on our failures rather than our victories, making students feel mentally retarded.
From Ancient Indian History to Classical Indian History
Talking about history, Issac mentioned that the panel has again renamed ‘Ancient Indian History’ to ‘Classical India History’. He noted that the term ancient denotes a period of no significance dating back to the British who divided India into ancient, medieval and modern. Issac recommended that ancient Indian history be renamed the classical period of Indian history.
The committee also recommended introduction of Indian systems of knowledge in the syllabus of all subjects.
NCERT is revising the curriculum of school textbooks in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The council recently constituted a 19-member committee on National Curriculum and Instructional Materials to finalize the curriculum, textbooks and instructional materials for students from Class 5 to 12th grade.
