Shortly after receiving her J.D. in 1995, Katyal began serving as a law clerk to Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He then served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. In 1999, Neal Katyal was invited by US President Bill Clinton to write a report on the importance of more pro bono legal work. That same year, he instituted special counsel rules. Additionally, in 1999, Neal Katyal represented the deans of several respected private law schools in Grutter v. Bollinger. He also served as co-counsel to Vice President Al Gore in Bush v. Gore.

In 2006, Katyal strongly opposed the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. He argued in a court case called Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. In this case, he represents prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. The court ruled that military commissions established by the George W. Bush administration to try prisoners violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the Geneva Conventions.

From May 2010 to June 2011, Katyill served as the Acting Deputy Attorney General of the United States during the Obama administration. Previously, he served as an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Deputy Attorney General, where he served as Principal Deputy Attorney General. During his tenure at the Justice Department, Katir brought numerous cases to the Supreme Court. One famous case was the 2009 case of Northwest Austin v. Holder, in which he successfully defended the legality of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

That same year, President Barack Obama selected Elena Kagan to replace retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens. As a result, Cartier succeeded Kagan as acting deputy attorney general. On May 24, 2011, while serving as Acting Deputy Attorney General, Katyill delivered a speech commemorating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the Department of Justice Town Hall. In 2015, after leaving the Obama administration, Katyill returned to Georgetown University Law Center. In addition, he became a partner at the international law firm Hogan Lovells.

In 2020, Katyal served as counsel for Nestlé and Cargill in a court case titled Nestlé USA, Inc. v. Doe. The case involved a group of children who were enslaved and forced to work on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast. They filed a collective lawsuit against Nestlé and Cargill. In 2021, Katyal provided legal representation to a large financial company called Citigroup. The company is seeking to recover $900 million that was mistakenly transferred to creditors of another company, Revlon Inc.

In October 2021, he began serving part-time as a member of the Galaxy Digital Advisory Board. In 2022, Neal Katyal joined the Board of Directors of Social Capital Ventures Inc. and became a partner at Chamath Palihapitiya Social and Capital Partnership. Katyal served as Minnesota’s special prosecutor in the 2020 murder case of George Floyd. In 2022, Katyal represented the defendants in Moore v. Harper before the Supreme Court. The case involves election law, redistricting and separate state legislative doctrine. Additionally, that same year, Katyill defended Johnson & Johnson in a legal case facing accusations of selling baby powder containing cancer-causing talc.
