New NMC Ordinance: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has set a ceiling of 100 UG seats per million population for each state. According to the NMC, the decision to cap the number of seats at 100 per 10 lakh people is aimed at reducing geographical disparities in the availability of health professionals

“With the objective of providing the right teaching environment to medical students and improving the overall quality of education, a provision to limit UG seats in each state to 100 per million population has been included in the recently released MSR guidelines for 2023,” the NMC said. in the official notification, noting that it will significantly contribute to ensuring the effective quality of education.

The NMC announced this while reiterating that numerous courts have made observations on medical college overcrowding, citing as an example the recent WP no. 17263 of 2020 case of KR Vasudeva vs State of TN and others dated 30 July 2021, Madurai Bench of Madras High Court warning NMC about overcrowding in medical college.

NMC’s proposal could add 40,000 MBBS seats across the country, won praise from the medical community

According to the NMC, if the medical facilities are distributed evenly, there will be a possibility of an increase of approximately 40,000 MBBS seats in the country.

“This decision of the NMC has been welcomed by the various state chapters of the IMA, student associations and the medical fraternity at large. The NMC will continue to strive to improve the quality of medical education in the country,” the NMC notification said.

NExT exam for group 2020: Commission for checking the readiness of medical schools for implementation

Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry has set up a 7-member committee to inspect the readiness of states and medical colleges to introduce the National Exit Test (NExT) for final year MBBS 2020 batch students. On July 13, 2023, the NMC postponed the NExT for MBBS 2019 Batch.
