New Pinocchio Clip Reveals Live-Action Wish Upon A Star Performance

A new Pinocchio clip reveals Cynthia Erivo’s live-action “When You Wish Upon a Star” performance from Disney’s latest remake of an animated classic.

Walt Disney Studios release “When You Wish Upon a Star” from Pinocchio, the recent live-action remake of the 1940 animated children’s classic. The film premiered to Disney+ on September 8 and was directed by Robert Zemeckis, best known for his work on movies like Forrest Gump and Back to the Future. The Pinocchio remake’s star-studded cast includes Tom Hanks as Geppetto, the toymaker who constructs and raises Pinocchio, Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy who brings the puppet to life, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the voice behind Jiminy Cricket, the wise anthropomorphic cricket who functions as Pinocchio’s conscience.

While the film was released in full earlier this month, for those curious about what to expect before settling in for the 105-minute runtime, a new clip from Walt Disney Studios offers the perfect sample. The video features Erivo singing the signature song, not only of Pinocchio but of the entire Disney brand, “When You Wish Upon a Star.” While the original version was sung by Cliff Edwards as Jiminy Cricket, Erivo takes on the seminal classic this time, performing the song to a CGI of Pinocchio, voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, and Gordon-Levitt’s Jiminy. This clip alone shows just how many elements of the original film are paid homage to in the remake. From the seemingly effortless blend of Erivo’s live performance with the animation of her incandescent wings and dress, to the design of Pinocchio as nearly identical to the 1940s version, this film aims to marry the nostalgic timelessness of the original with the seamless movie magic provided by modern film technology. To see the film in full, Pinocchio can be streamed on Disney+.
