New York City Landmarks Look Extra Delicious in New Holiday Museum Exhibition

This season, the Big Apple gets a sweet holiday twist.

Through January 15, the Museum of the City of New York is displaying iconic NYC landmarks made of gingerbread in its aptly named Gingerbread NYC exhibit, now in its second year.

The installation includes the work of professional and amateur New York bakers tasked with recreating more than 20 hot spots such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Yankee Stadium, Grand Army Plaza Arch and the Bronx Zoo. And to make it even tastier, patrons can vote for their favorites and their numbers count in a season-ending competition judged by five New York culinary icons.

According to museum staff, the entire exhibit began with 1,010 lbs. gingerbread dough, 161 lbs. of glaze and 105 lbs. from sweets. Bakers and decorators – some of whom have day jobs outside the food industry and were doing it in their spare time – spent 3,500 hours creating the structures.

“We’re enjoying MCNY’s centennial and celebrating the holidays,” says Stephanie Wilchfort, Ronay Menschel Director and President of the Museum of the City of New York. “Last year’s installation was a delight to behold (not to mention the smell). Now we once again have the sweet opportunity to highlight the special ingredient that makes New York, New York, the creative people – professionals and amateurs – who come from all over the city.”
